Fraction Action

We are starting a new unit in math on FRACTIONS. We are going to learn about what makes a fraction, equivalent fractions, fractions on a number line, and improper fractions. You can help your student learn about fractions by asking them to help you cut pieces of fruit into equal parts--that's a fraction! For example, cut an apple into two pieces first--that's half! Cut those pieces into half again and you've got fourths! You can show them that two halves equal one whole and 2/4 = 1/2.

You can also use Skittles or M&Ms to show fractions. Pour all the candies into a bowl. Ask your student to separate them into colors. You can write a fraction for each color. For example, if there are 24 pieces of candy altogether and 8 of them are yellow, you can say that 8/24 are yellow. This is the perfect time to play with your food! Make it a game and have fun with it.

We will have a PTP on Thursday, February 11 and the subject will be Fractions. Please make plans to attend if you can. The PTP begins at 8:15 and ends at 9:00 in Room 18. We hope to see you there!
